It is off-white to a rich red in color and usually forms steep, rounded walls and domes. The goblins in Goblin Valley State Park are formed from Entrada Sandstone. The Curtis Formation is parallel-stratified and is up to 150 feet thick in the northern parts of the Swell. It was formed by silt deposition in a shallow marine environment. It has thin layers that contain microfossils and mollusks. It is brown to faded green in color and weathers into sandy benches or shaley walls. The Summerville Formation is parallel-stratified and is up to 325 feet thick.

Both sites are on the western edge of the San Rafael Swell. Other signs of habitation were discovered south of Vernal, Utah, and many sites have been found along the Flaming Gorge in Wyoming.
