Probably. Maybe. Salmon populations, like those of so many other things, are declining rapidly. Some of this is due to over-fishing, some to climate changes. Each year, there are more fishing closures along the Kenai, and the commercial catch in Southeast declines as each year, the returns are getting a little smaller. Over the past hundred years, 232 genetically distinct strains of salmon (that’s strains, not species) have gone extinct. Due to decreasing runs, the value of the salmon catch almost dropped in half between 1994 and 2000.

It’s estimated that 80% of the excess heat can be shed this way. 28 n Marine Life Salmon There are five types of salmon in Alaska: pink (humpie), chum (dog), coho (silver), sockeye (red), and the prize of them all, the king, or chinook. Now that we’ve said that, we’re going to list a sixth type, the steelhead. Steelhead, long classified as a type of trout, were officially moved into the salmon category in 2000. For reasons that require explaining more about fish biology than you’re probably interested in, there are a lot of fish experts who aren’t real happy with this move.

The next stage is the fry stage, where they start to look like real fish. They’re about an inch or two long at this point, and they start to get vertical bar marks – like they’ll get later when they’re packaged and barcoded in the supermarket – to help them hide in the streambed. This stage lasts a couple of months. Next, they turn into fingerlings, or parr. They’ve gotten bigger now – a couple of inches or so – and they may stay in this stage for anywhere from a couple of months (pink and chum) up to a couple years for sockeye and chinook.
