Most workshops can be facilitated by one person, unless the group is very large. However, more complex events, such as a conference or a seminar series, will involve a number of different academics who have expertise in various aspects of learning and teaching. For this reason, it is important to get to know the teaching and learning interests and expertise of academic staff to determine who might be able to work with you in facilitating different events. Indeed, it is often a good idea to have a member of the ‘target group’ assist with both planning and running an event and provide examples.
Beyond that, I find that I still like the reflective approach I tried to take. And I still believe passionately in the importance of needs analysis as a process. It is a thing that can get squeezed when times are tight. But it should not be squeezed. If you miss out the needs analysis and plunge straight into designing the strategy or programme or workshop or Virtual Learning Environment or whatever, you can end up with what I call the Concorde syndrome: an elegant solution to the wrong problem!

I then provide the third case, which considers the development needs of women staff across an entire university.
