Housman denied that he was mocking the patriotism expressed in the poem,9 and I am inclined to accept his statement at face value. The tone betrays no trace of sarcasm, and the function of Housman’s redefinition of the phrase which expresses that patriotism is not mockery but the revelation of his persona’s insight into the human condition in which patriotism finds its real meaning. The structure of the poem involves a process of revelation, and the repetition of the cant phrase in its different contexts carries the shifts in tone which reveal the growing insight of the persona.

But one should beware of labels whatever they are. Actually there is no pessimism and less optimism. Those of us who are blessed with health of body and mind, and even those who have only health of mind, are impelled by instinct to be as happy as possible, so long as they are not thinking about their little or their great woes. Perhaps, after all, happiness that comes naturally is the only form of health, and the healthy person resents a spurious happiness whether in verse or laughter. Housman must be ranked amongst the happy poets because he is strong enough to look sorrow in the face.

Nature is relentlessly, hectically active: the Wrekin heaves the forest fleece, the gale plies the saplings double, the leaves snow thick on Severn, the wind in anger threshes the wood, the hill heaves, the wind riots. Verbs are starkly monosyllabic (‘heaves’, ‘plies’, ‘snow’, ‘threshed’) and tremors surge through the poem’s pervasive alliteration and assonance: ‘On Wenlock Edge the wood’s in trouble’; ‘His forest fleece the Wrekin heaves’. No doubt it was such turbulence that prompted Vaughan Williams to create an uninhibitedly violent musical setting.
